Parks and Open Spaces

Petworth is fortunate to be home to a number of parks, green spaces and children’s play areas, which provide residents and visitors opportunities for sport, leisure and recreation.

We at Petworth Town Council take pride in all parks and open spaces and are constantly striving to ensure they are maintained to a high standard.

The largest open space we manage is Hampers Common at which there is a large play area and recreational sports activities. We also manage Rosemary Gardens in the town centre; a beautiful space to enjoy the surroundings and for children to have some fun on the play area.

Petworth Deer Park is owned and managed by the National Trust, and the wall around the 700 acre deer park is 14 miles long. The grounds are managed sustainably for wildlife and are protected under a Higher Level Stewardship agreement with Natural England.

Petworth Park is open 8am to 8pm British summer time and 6pm in the winter. It has a dedicated car park, which lies one mile north of Petworth on the A283 (the closest SAT NAV postcode is GU28 9LS).

Parking is £4 or free for National Trust members. There are also pedestrian entrances through the Cowyard tunnel in Petworth town and two on the A272 Midhurst Road.

Rosemary Gardens

Located in the centre of Petworth, Rosemary Gardens is an open space where residents and visitors can enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Within the gardens is a play area which was installed in 2016, including a range of items centring on a tower from which extend walkways, climbing nets and monkey ropes to fire the imagination of the youngsters. There are two climbing frames, a seesaw, a roundabout, two slides and two sets of swings to cater for the older children as well as the youngsters.

Hampers Common

Hampers Common is located in the north of the Parish and is much enjoyed by the Town’s residents & visitors. Home to a play area installed in 2016, many local children & young people enjoy the play equipment and the sports facilities provided at the site.

Visit the Hampers Common Hire page for detailed information on the hire for events that will benefit the parishioners of Petworth.
